Larry Williams is a former athletic director at Portland and Marquette universities.

Among the first questions he faced as he was introduced at a morning news conference in Akron was what will happen to the Akron athletics in this time of high-profile cutbacks, which have already included the school’s baseball team.

“I do think it is important that a school of our size, budgetary size, and stature, absolutely remain committed to competition at that highest level.”

And what about the MAC?
“To pursue championships at the MAC level will be an outstanding opportunity and an outstanding mark of our success.”

Williams says he wanted to come to northeast Ohio because he was so impressed with the area when he played for the Cleveland Browns in the 1980s.
